Superintendent’s Office
I would like to welcome you to The College Community School District. College Community is a growing school district that serves approximately 5,800 students from Linn, Benton and Johnson Counties. The 137 square mile district includes the parts of southwest Cedar Rapids, the Cities of Ely, Fairfax, Shueyville, Swisher, and Walford along with surrounding rural area.
The district’s regular programs are located on a 500 acre site on 76th Avenue in Cedar Rapids. This central campus site is unique for districts our size and is a source of great pride for district patrons. The Prairie campus consists of five elementary schools (PK-4), an intermediate school (5-6), middle school and 9th Grade Academy (7-9), high school (10-12) and three off-site programs.
Continued growth brings exciting changes! Voters in the College Community District passed a $49.5 million bond referendum on February 2, 2016 to address enrollment growth and facility needs. Over a five-year period, major work will take place at Prairie High School, Crest, Heights and View. In March 2020, voters approved a bond referendum to construct a new 5/6 building on 80 acres directly south of Prairie Point Middle School. Funds generated would also allow significant renovations to Creek in preparation for our 9th graders and district programs.
1 to 1 Computing: Prairie has been committed to 1:1 computing since 2012. Each student in grades 5-12 is issued a personal Chromebook device. Grades K-4 use a combination of iPads and Chromebooks. Each teacher in the district receives a 13 inch MacBook Air and each classroom has an LCD projector.
College Community offers a comprehensive educational program. Using the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), Iowa Assessment and teacher-made curriculum based formative assessments; district staff closely monitors each child’s progress. Using that data we design instruction to insure that each student meets the district’s standards-based diploma requirements and is prepared for the future as a learner, consumer, worker and citizen.
Parent and community support is highly valued. We strive to develop close relationships with students and parents so that our students feel safe and connected. We take great pride in our Prairie schools which are made up of outstanding staff, high performing students and parents and community members who value the importance of a quality education.
I hope our website will prove to be helpful to you. If you are thinking about moving to our community, thanks for your interest in the College Community School District. If you are already a member of our community, I hope you share our Prairie Pride and our excitement in where we are going.
